DESCRIPTION (ACTUAL IMAGES) RIGHT FROM THE MOMENT THAT THEIR PAN AM FLIGHT TOUCHED DOWN AT JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN NEW YORK ON FEBRUARY 7, THE BEATLES WERE SUBJECTED TO EVERY FORM OF MEDIA EXPOSURE KNOWN IN 1964 : JOURNALISTS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, RADIO STATIONS AND TV NEWS CREWS COVERED THEIR EVERY SINGLE MOVE, MANY WITH LIVE REPORTS. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WERE CLAMORING, CONSTANTLY, FOR THEIR ATTENTION IF ONLY FOR A FEW SECONDS, IN PERSON, BY PHONE, BY ANY MEANS IMAGINABLE.
ON SUNDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 9, 1964, THE
BEATLES PERFORMED ON '"THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW" BEFORE A THEN-RECORD AMERICAN
TELEVISION AUDIENCE OF OVER 73 MILLION PEOPLE. CBS RECEIVED OVER 50,000 REQUESTS
FOR TICKETS TO THE SHOW. ONLY A LUCKY 1,500 GOT TO SEE THEIR HEROES IN PERSON.
FOR MANY WHO WATCHED THE EVENT, THE SOUND AND IMAGES OF THE GROUP'S PERFORMANCE
WAS FOREVER EMBEDDED IN THEIR MINDS. THIS WAS THE NIGHT THE BEATLES AND
ALL OF AMERICA HAD BEEN WAITING FOR.
- AND WOULD BE TELECAST LIVE FROM NEW YORK CITY TO COAST TO COAST WITH AMERICA'S FAVORITE HOST.
HERE IS AN IMAGE OF THE ORIGINAL
THE 16TH STARTED WITH A MORNING CAMERA REHEARSAL, AND THEN
SHORTLY AFTER 1:30 PM, LUCKY TICKET HOLDERS FILED INTO
THE HOTEL'S NAPOLEON ROOM FOR THE SHOW'S DRESS REHEARSAL.
THE GROUP PERFORMED SIX SONGS IN BOTH THIS REHEARSAL AND THE LIVE BROADCAST IN TWO SEGMENTS:
"SHE LOVES YOU",
"THIS BOY", "ALL MY LOVING", "I SAW HER STANDING THERE", "FROM ME TO YOU",
AND CLOSING WITH "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND". THE REHEARSAL WAS
TAPED BUT NOT BROADCAST BY CBS. AFTER THE SONG ENDED,
THE BEATLES THEN HEADED BACK TO THEIR ROOMS TO RELAX AND
PREPARE FOR THE EVENING'S LIVE BROADCAST.
Just as in New York, news of The Beatles arrival in Miami Beach resulted in a
sea of fans congregating outside the studio. It was only behind a wedge of
police officers cutting through the mob that The Beatles were able to make it to
the stage on time, picking up their instruments just seconds before Sullivan had
finished his introduction (As noted on thIS OFFERED ORIGINAL production
schedule), The Beatles were the opening and closing act for the show.
The one-page show schedule MEASURES 8½"
x 11", AND is an internal CBS television studio document used by staff onsite
actually involved in the production of the show. IT has been beautifully signed
ON THE REVERSE In pencil with RINGO having added "Beatles" above his name. THE
PRODUCTION SHEET Displays
the complete line-up for the Sunday February 16, 1964 live telecast from the
Deauville Hotel, Miami Beach. IT Also lists the six commercial breaks for the
sponsors Lipton Tea, Kent Cigarettes, Anacin and Pillsbury.
Obviously one of the employees involved in the production of the show seized the rare opportunity afforded by his or her close proximity to the group on this important occasion, and asked them to sign this unique production schedule document related to the show (possibly just because it was handy, as opposed to its great historical significance as a document available only onsite to the few employees involved in production of the show). Beatles memorabilia relating to any of the group's three Ed Sullivan Show appearances in 1964 is exceedingly rare, let alone a piece signed by all four band members. This is not only one of the most significant Beatles signed items in existence, but an iconic piece of cultural history that transcends the hobby field. It is a museum-quality piece that would be equally at home in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The Museum of Television and Broadcasting, or The Smithsonian Institution.
ACCOMPANIED BY A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM PERRY COX,
BEATLES U.S. RECORDS EXPERT. AUTHOR OF "THE BEATLES RECORD PRICE GUIDE" SERIES
