RELEASED: 1/20/64
EAST COAST, #3 COVER
FIRST LABEL VARIATION

(ACTUAL IMAGES)

THE VERY FIRST VERSION OF CAPITOL RECORDS' "MEET THE BEATLES" ALBUM RELEASED IN VERY EARLY 1964, FEATURES THE CAPITOL RAINBOW LABELS LACKING THE PUBLISHING PRINT "BMI" OR "ASCAP" ON BOTH LABELS. IT IS KNOWN THAT ONLY THE FIRST 200,000 TOTAL COPIES WERE PRESSED IN THIS MANNER AND ALL SUBSEQUENT ISSUES ADDED THE PUBLISHING PRINT. OF THOSE INITIAL PRESS NUMBERS, ONLY A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE WERE PRESSED IN STEREO, AND ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE NUMBER OF THOSE THAT REMAIN IN ANY RESPECTABLE CONDITION TODAY. THESE EARLY FIRST LABEL COPIES WERE SWEPT OFF THE SHELVES DURING THE ONSLAUGHT OF BEATLEMANIA AND MOST HAVE BEEN PLAYED BEYOND RECOGNITION AND DISCARDED. TODAY, ONLY A FEW HUNDRED EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED TO DATE TO HAVE SURVIVED. SINCE ONLY FIFTEEN PERCENT OF CAPITOL'S BEATLES ALBUMS MANUFACTURED PRIOR TO 1966 WERE PRESSED IN STEREO, APPROXIMATELY ONLY 50 TO 60 STEREO FIRST LABEL COPIES OF "MEET THE BEATLES!" HAVE BEEN VERIFIED.

THIS STUPENDOUS WORLD CLASS EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE, IS ONE OF THE TOP THREE EXAMPLES IN THE WORLD OF THE KNOWN SURVIVING "MEET THE BEATLES!" STEREO FIRST LABEL ISSUES.

ACCOMPANIED BY A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM PERRY COX, BEATLES U.S. RECORDS EXPERT AND AUTHOR OF "THE BEATLES RECORD PRICE GUIDE" SERIES OF BOOKS.

HAVE BEEN VERIFIED.

ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT KNOWN EXACTLY WHEN CAPITOL BEGAN SHRINK-WRAPPING ITS ALBUMS, VISUAL EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT "MEET THE BEATLES!" WAS NOT SHRINK-WRAPPED WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY ISSUED ON JANUARY 20, 1964. DURING THE END CREDITS OF "THE BEATLES FIRST U.S. VISIT" DOCUMENTARY, WHICH WAS FILMED IN EARLY FEBRUARY 1964, FANS ARE SHOWN PURCHASING COPIES OF THE ALBUM IN A NEW YORK RECORD STORE. THE ALBUMS ARE NOT IN ANY PROTECTIVE BAG OR SHRINK-WRAP. WHILE MANY RECORD RETAILERS DISPLAYED THE ALBUM WITHOUT PROTECTION, SOME STORES PLACED THE JACKETS IN LOOSE POLY BAGS.

BEING OFFERED HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW EAST COAST FIRST PRESSINGS WERE PACKAGED BY INDEPENDENT DEPARTMENT STORES:

THE ACCOMPANYING MINT MINUS COVER IS WRAPPED IN ITS ORIGINAL "IN-STORE STEREO BAGGY WRAP" WHICH STATES: "THIS IS A STEREO RECORD TO BE PLAYED ONLY ON STEREO PHONOGRAPHS".

THIS COVER ITSELF IS VIRTUALLY IMPECCABLE AND GRADED MINT MINUS! PEERING CAREFULLY UNDER THE BAGGYWRAP, THE COVER LOOKS AS THOUGH IT CAME OUT OF THE FACTORY YESTERDAY. BORDERS ARE "SNOW" WHITE. BACK COVER IS PERFECTION.

IT IS INDEED THE RAREST TO ACQUIRE - PARTICULARLY IN THIS GREAT CONDITION. VINYL AND LABELS ARE A GLOSSY NEAR MINT. WITH VERY MINIMAL PLAY EVIDENT, IT IS SO DIFFICULT FINDING THIS VERY EARLY PRESSING IN SUCH EXCELLENT CONDITION.

WITH ORIGINAL 1ST ISSUE ROYAL BLUE INNER SLEEVE.

CONDITION: M- / NM

BEING OFFERED HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW EAST COAST FIRST PRESSINGS WERE PACKAGED BY INDEPENDENT DEPARTMENT STORES:

THE ACCOMPANYING COVER IS WRAPPED IN ITS ORIGINAL "SEARS ROEBUCK AND CO" IN-STORE BAGGY WRAP. THE LP COVER ITSELF IS IN BEAUTIFUL NEAR MINT MINUS CONDITION, WITH BRIGHT, BOLD COLORS REMAINING. THE ONLY FLAW IS THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER HAS POKED THROUGH THE BAGGYWRAP, AND HAS A 1" AREA OF WEAR TO THAT CORNER TIP.. THE BAGGYWRAP DISPLAYS NICELY WITH VERY LITTLE AGING, AND TWO SMALL TEARS ALONG THE TOP EDGE WITH NO AFFECT TO THE LP COVER AT ALL.

THE RECORD IS IN GLIMMERING AND GLOSSY NEAR MINT, BORDERING SLIGHTLY ON NEAR MINT MINUS WITH VERY MINIMAL PLAY EVIDENT. JUST TWO HAIRLINE MARKS ON SIDE 2 THAT APPEAR TO BE INNER SLEEVE PULLS. IT IS A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST LABEL VARIATION.

WITH ORIGINAL 1ST ISSUE ROYAL BLUE INNER SLEEVE.

WEST COAST PRESSING #6 COVER.
VERY FIRST LOS ANGELES LABEL VARIATION WITH 1 "BMI" CREDITS

DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FIRST LABEL VARIATION (WITHOUT PUBLISHING CREDITS) OF THIS LP WAS SOLELY PRODUCED ON THE EAST COAST, THE SECOND LABEL (ONE "BMI" CREDIT) PRESSED IN LOS ANGELES, IS THEREFORE THE VERY FIRST PRESSING OF THE ALBUM ON THE WEST COAST. FURTHERMORE, ON PAGE 19, OF BRUCE SPIZER'S GREAT "CAPITOL ALBUMS" BOOK, HE STATES THE FACT THAT THE STEREO VARIATION OF THIS LABEL STYLE SHOULD EXIST, BUT AS OF PRESS TIME, IT WAS NOT CONFIRMED.

IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED SINCE - AND HERE IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW MEGA-RARE COPIES TO TURN UP. THIS LOS ANGELES PRESSING IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING WITH THE RECORD GRADING A STELLAR MINT MINUS "UNPLAYED" GEM. THE LOS ANGELES "GLOSSY" LABELS ARE EQUALLY TREMENDOUS AND RADIATE BEAUTIFULLY.

THIS WONDERFUL RARER WEST COAST EARLY FEBRUARY 1964 PRESSING #6 COVER, HAS "BEATLES!" IN OLIVE GREEN PRINT LETTERING, AND DOES NOT HAVE THE "PRODUCED BY GEORGE MARTIN" CREDIT PRINT ON THE BACK COVER (CAP2047.SC1A, SPIZER). THE "STEREO NEEDLE DAMAGE" INFO AT BOTTOM OF BACK COVER IS ALSO EVIDENT.

ALSO INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL LOS ANGELES FIRST ISSUE CAPITOL RECORDS LATE 1963 ROYAL BLUE INNER DUST SLEEVE.
