PROMOTIONAL RECORDS
CAPITOL

PROMOTIONAL RECORDS WERE DISTRIBUTED FOR FREE IN ORDER TO PROMOTE A RECORDING THAT WOULD BE COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. "PROMO" RECORDS WERE SENT DIRECTLY TO BROADCASTERS, SUCH AS RADIO STATION DISC JOCKEYS, AND AT TIMES, MUSIC JOURNALISTS IN ADVANCE OF THE RELEASE OF COMMERCIAL "STOCK COPY" ISSUES, IN THE HOPE THAT AIRPLAY, REVIEWS, AND OTHER FORMS OF EXPOSURE WILL RESULT AND STIMULATE THE PUBLIC'S INTEREST IN THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE.

BECAUSE PROMOTIONAL RECORDS WERE PRODUCED IN SMALLER QUANTITY THAN RELEASES THAT WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THEY ARE CONSIDERED EXTREMELY VALUABLE, FOR THEY WERE NEVER RELEASED IN RECORD STORES.

ITEMS LISTED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER OF RELEASE DATE.

WMCA GOOD GUYS / "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND"
C
APITOL RECORDS PROMOTIONAL 45RPM PICTURE SLEEVE
ISSUED: JANUARY 1964

THESE PROMOTIONAL SLEEVES WERE PAIRED WITH COPIES OF THE CAPITOL SINGLE "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" AND GIVEN TO LISTENERS AS PRIZES IN THE NEW YORK CITY STATION WMCA BEATLES WIG CONTEST. CONTESTANTS WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THEIR FRIENDS OR FROM NEWSPAPERS AND TO DRAW BEATLES WIGS ON THEM. THE TWO MOST ORIGINAL ENTRIES WERE ALSO AWARDED $57 FROM RADIO 57, WMCA.

THE PRODUCTION RUN FOR THE WMCA SLEEVE WAS EXTREMELY LIMITED. ACCORDING TO BEATLES EXPERT AND AUTHOR PERRY COX, THERE ARE LESS THAN TEN COPIES OF THIS SLEEVE THAT ARE STILL KNOWN TO EXIST.

ALONG SIDE VEE-JAY'S "ASK ME WHY" PROMOTIONAL TITLE SLEEVE, THE  WMCA GOOD GUYS CUSTOM SLEEVE, HAS UNDOUBTEDLY BECOME ONE THE RAREST AND MOST VALUABLE OF ALL BEATLES RECORD SLEEVES AMONG THE COLLECTOR'S WORLD.

THE CONDITION OF THIS EXAMPLE IS NO DOUBT ONE OF THE FINEST THAT HAVE SURVIVED.

ISSUED TO RADIO STATIONS: FEBRUARY 1964

PROMOTIONAL "NOT FOR SALE" SLEEVE & COMPACT 33 DISC

(ACTUAL SCANS)

TO ENCOURAGE DISC JOCKEYS TO PROMOTE THE BEATLES, CAPITOL PREPARED OPEN-END INTERVIEW RECORDS THAT ALLOWED A DISC JOCKEY TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT HE WAS PERSONALLY CONDUCTING AN IN-STATION INTERVIEW WITH THE GROUP. AS PART OF ITS BEATLES CAMPAIGN, CAPITOL SENT COPIES OF THE FIRST BEATLES INTERVIEW RECORD TO BROADCASTERS IN FEBRUARY, 1964. IT WAS TITLED "THE BEATLES OPEN-END INTERVIEW".

THIS MOST SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST OPEN-END INTERVIEW SET IS AN ABSOLUTE WINNER INDEED.

  "BALANCED FOR BROADCAST" FEBRUARY 1964
GREAT NEW RELEASES FROM THE
SOUND 'CAPITOL' OF THE WORLD

CAPITOL PRO-2538, LP ALBUM
WEST COAST PRESSING, #5 COVER.
RELEASED: EARLY 1964

THE BEATLES WERE FEATURED ON THIS EXTREMELY RARE PROMOTIONAL LP ALBUM DISC, WHICH WAS ISSUED TO RADIO STATIONS IN EARLY 1964. BOTH THE FRONT AND THE BACK LINER EXPLAIN THAT THE DISC IS "BALANCED FOR BROADCAST". ACCORDING TO THE BACK LINER, "THE SELECTIONS IN THIS SPECIALLY-PREPARED LP HAVE BEEN ARRANGED IN A SEQUENCE WHICH WILL ENABLE YOU TO PRESENT AN ENTIRE SIDE AT A TIME. IN OTHER WORDS, 'INSTANT PROGRAMMING', FROM THE FIRST THROUGH THE LAST TRACK".

SIDE TWO CONTAINS THE BEATLES SONGS THIS BOY AND IT WON'T BE LONG SEQUENCED WITH TUNES BY THE LIKES OF WAYNE NEWTON, FREDDY MARTIN (DANCE ORCHESTRA LEADER AND FATHER OF CAPITOL PRESS RELATIONS MANAGER FRED MARTIN JR.), COMEDIANS LES WEINRIB AND JOYCE JAMESON, FOLK SINGER DICK WEISSMAN AND COUNTRY ARTIST WANDA JACKSON. IT IS DESCRIBED AS BEING "SUITABLE FOR 'VARIETY' MUSIC STATIONS." ALTHOUGH CAPITOL HOPED STATIONS WOULD BROADCAST AN ENTIRE SIDE AT A TIME, IT IS UNLIKELY THAT ANY DISC JOCKEYS WERE LAZY ENOUGH TO PROGRAM EITHER SIDE OF THE DISC FROM START TO FINISH.

CONDITION OF THE COVER IS SOLID NEAR MINT MINUS, WITH SMALL AREA OF AGING STAIN ON UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF FRONT AND BACK. SOME MINIMAL LIGHT SPORADIC SPOTTING ON LOWER AREA ON BACK COVER. NO RINGWEAR OR SPLITS. THE SPINE IS TERRIFIC.

THE RECORD IS A GORGEOUS NEAR MINT MINUS WITH VERY MINIMAL PLAY TIME EVIDENT. THE LABELS ARE STELLAR AND GLOSSY.

CONDITION: NM- / NM-
ITEM#: PR271
PRICE: $350
