PROMOTIONAL RECORDS
SWAN

PROMOTIONAL RECORDS WERE DISTRIBUTED FOR FREE IN ORDER TO PROMOTE A RECORDING THAT WOULD BE COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. "PROMO" RECORDS WERE SENT DIRECTLY TO BROADCASTERS, SUCH AS RADIO STATION DISC JOCKEYS, AND AT TIMES, MUSIC JOURNALISTS IN ADVANCE OF THE RELEASE OF COMMERCIAL "STOCK COPY" ISSUES, IN THE HOPE THAT AIRPLAY, REVIEWS, AND OTHER FORMS OF EXPOSURE WILL RESULT AND STIMULATE THE PUBLIC'S INTEREST IN THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE.

BECAUSE PROMOTIONAL RECORDS WERE PRODUCED IN SMALLER QUANTITY THAN RELEASES THAT WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THEY ARE CONSIDERED EXTREMELY VALUABLE, FOR THEY WERE NEVER RELEASED IN RECORD STORES.

  I'LL GET YOU
SWAN S-4152-I
RELEASED: EARLY 1964

(ACTUAL SCANS)

ONE-SIDED ULTRA-RARE "PROMOTION COPY" 45 SINGLE WHITE LABEL BLACK PRINT (4152.DJ2C(II), SPIZER)

SWAN'S INITIAL RELEASE OF SHE LOVES YOU ON ITS WHITE LABEL WITH RED PRINT IN 1963 FAILED MISERABLY AND SALES WERE HORRIBLE. BY THE TIME SWAN REISSUED SHE LOVES YOU ON ITS BLACK LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT IN JANUARY 1964, BEATLEMANIA HAD FINALLY REACHED AMERICA. ON ITS SECOND GO-ROUND, THE SINGLE WAS AN INSTANT HIT. AFTER SPENDING FOUR WEEKS AT NUMBER TWO BEHIND CAPITOL'S I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND, SWAN'S ENTRY INTO THE BEATLES' SWEEPSTAKES TOPPED THE CHARTS FOR TWO WEEKS AND WENT ON TO SELL OVER TWO AND A HALF MILLION COPIES.

WHEN SHE LOVES YOU BEGAN DROPPING OFF THE CHARTS, SWAN ATTEMPTED TO GET ADDITIONAL MILEAGE OUT OF THE SINGLE BY PROMOTING ITS B-SIDE. TO PROMPT DISC JOCKEYS TO PLAY I'LL GET YOU, SWAN ISSUED THIS VERY RARE WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL SINGLE WITH I'LL GET YOU ON ONE SIDE AND A BLANK SIDE AND LABEL ON THE OTHER. THIS PROMOTIONAL ONE-SIDED 45 IS VERY SCARCE, FOR NOT MANY WERE PRESSED !!!

THIS PARTICULAR VARIATION IS THE EAST COAST ISSUE OF THE PROMO 45 AND WAS PRESSED BY RCA'S ROCKAWAY FACTORY. THIS LABEL VARIATION (4152.DJ2C(II), SPIZER) HAS THE WORDS "PROMOTION COPY" AT THE 3 O'CLOCK POSITION.

THE CORRECT TRAIL-OFF AREAS OF THIS RECORD HAS THE VIRTUE STUDIO MARKINGS IN THE TRAIL-OFF WAX, AND WIDE SPACED GROOVES ON THE NON-MUSIC BLANK SIDE.

THIS CONDITION OF THIS PROMOTIONAL COPY IS AN ABSOLUTE GEM AND GRADES AT A SPARKLING UNPLAYED "AS NEW" NEAR MINT.

IT IS OBVIOUS IT HAS BEEN WELL PRESERVED AND HAS NEVER SEEN RADIO STATION PLAY ! THE LABELS ARE STUNNING AS WELL, RETAINING IT'S GLOSSY WHITE SHEEN !

SIE LIEBT DICH (SHE LOVES YOU) B/W IíLL GET YOU
SWAN 4182
RELEASED: MAY 21,1964

(ACTUAL SCANS)

DISC JOCKEY ADVANCE COPY, "PROMOTIONAL COPY" & "NOT FOR SALE" (SWAN 4182.DJ1B, SPIZER)

THE GERMAN-LYRIC RECORDING OF SIE LIEBT DICH WAS RECORDED BY THE BEATLES ON JANUARY 29, 1964 AND WAS ISSUED IN GERMANY ON THE ODEON LABEL IN MID MARCH 1964. ON OR ABOUT MAY 21, 1964, SWAN RELEASED A SINGLE PAIRING SIE LIEBT DICH (SHE LOVES YOU) WITH THE SAME MASTER RECORDING OF I'LL GET YOU THAT SERVED AS THE B-SIDE TO SHE LOVES YOU. THE RECORD LISTS THE GROUP AS "DIE BEATLES" ON ITS A-SIDE LABEL.

SWAN WAS HOPING THAT THE NOVELTY OF HEARING THE BEATLES SING IN GERMAN WOULD BE ENOUGH TO OBTAIN RADIO AIR PLAY AND SALES. IT WASN'T, FOR IT DIPPED TO NUMBER 97 BEFORE DISAPPEARING FROM THE BILLBOARD CHARTS. FURTHERMORE, SWAN HAD THE RIGHTS TO THE SPECIFIC MASTER RECORDINGS, BUT NOT THE SONGS THEMSELVES AND WERE SUED BY CAPITOL RECORDS. SWAN SETTLED THE LAWSUIT, AND THE SETTLEMENT KILLED ANY CHANCE OF SIE LIEBT DICH BECOMING A HIT IN THE U.S. THIS EXPLAINS THE RECORD'S RELATIVE SCARCITY.

THIS STELLAR MONARCH PRESSING OF THE PROMOTIONAL DISC IS PRESSED IN STYRENE AND HAS VIRTUE STUDIO HAND ETCHED MARKINGS INCLUDING THE JOB NUMBERS HAND ETCHED IN THEIR TRAIL OFF AREAS. THE A-SIDE HAS "PROMOTIONAL COPY" IN THE LOWER LEFT AND A PRINTED "X" IN THE LOWER RIGHT. THE "DON'T DROP OUT" PRINT IS ALSO THERE IN THE UPPER LEFT, AS IT IS ON ALL OF THE WHITE LABEL COPIES OF THIS RELEASE.

THE B-SIDE HAS "PROMOTIONAL COPY" IN THE LOWER LEFT AND "NOT FOR SALE" IN THE LOWER RIGHT.

THE CONDITION OF THE VINYL IS AN UNPLAYED PRISTINE MINT MINUS WITH GROOVES THAT DISPLAY A GLEAMING, BRILLIANT AND SHINY HIGH-GLOSS SHEEN. THE LABELS ARE MERE PERFECTION, SNOW WHITE NEAR MINT WITH DEEP, DARK BLACK FONTS.

BECAUSE THIS SINGLE SOLD POORLY AND HAD LIMITED DISTRIBUTION, ALL STOCK COPY VARIATIONS ARE RELATIVELY RARE. YET MORE IMPORTANT, THE PROMOTIONAL SINGLES ARE EVEN SCARCER, AND WE ARE PROUD TO OFFER SUCH A MAGNIFICENT EXAMPLE HERE.

CONDITION: M- (UNPLAYED)
ITEM#: PR182
PRICE: $3,750
