INTERVIEW RECORDS FROM THE SIXTIES

"A TRIP TO MIAMI" (PARTS I & II)
LEE ALAN PRESENTS
LEE ALAN (WXYZ) LAP 1/2
SILVER PRINT ON BLUE LABEL
WITH ORIGINAL INSERT
RELEASED: APRIL 1964

(ACTUAL SCANS)

HERE IS AN INCREDIBLY RARE BEATLES USA ISSUE 45 SINGLE FROM APRIL 1964 AND IS ONE OF THE RAREST BEATLES RECORDS IN EXISTENCE - ACCOMPANIED BY THE VERY RARE INSERT AS WELL. THIS SIX-MINUTE INTERVIEW RECORD WAS A FREE ITEM GIVEN TO THOSE WHO PURCHASED LEE ALAN'S TWO PAGE STORY ON HIS MEETING WITH THE BEATLES. THIS "FREE ITEM FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY" IS ACTUALLY STATED ON THE LABELS OF THE RECORD.

DETROIT DJ LEE ALAN WAS GRANTED AN INTERVIEW WITH THE BEATLES AT THE DEAUVILLE HOTEL IN MIAMI BEACH ON FEBRUARY, 19, 1964, DURING THEIR STAY FOR THEIR ED SULLIVAN SHOW APPEARANCES. WHEN LEE THANKS THEM FOR TAKING TIME OUT FROM THEIR VACATION TO TALK WITH HIM, THE GROUP SINGS PART OF CONNIE FRANCIS' 1962 TOP TEN HIT "VACATION".

THE PRINTED STORY IS THE TWO PAGE 7" X 15" INSERT THAT WAS INCLUDED WITH THE RECORD AND IS USUALLY MISSING IF ONE IS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND THIS RECORD. THIS IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW THAT RETAIN THE 2 PAGED TRI-FOLD INSERT.

THE INSERT IS GRADED AT A VG WITH WEAR ALONG THE 3 FACTORY FOLDS AND A SPOT OF PAPER LOSS ALONG A SMALL SECTION OF THE EDGE. THERE IS ALSO SOME SPORADIC EVIDENCE OF AGING STAINS ALONG THE EDGES.

THE VINYL IS GRADED AT A SHINY AND RESPECTABLE VG++ WITH SOME LIGHT SUPERFICIAL MARKS THAT ARE NOT DEEP. THE GROOVES RETAIN A VERY NICE GLEAM. THE LABELS ARE GRADED VG+ AND DISPLAY BRIGHTLY WITH AGING STAINS EVIDENT ON THE "PART 1" SIDE.

LEE THEN ASKS THE BEATLES WHEN THEY FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE "STAMP OUT THE BEATLES" CAMPAIGN THAT ORIGINATED IN DETROIT. PAUL REPLIES AT THE KENNEDY AIRPORT PRESS CONFERENCE, GEORGE THINKS IT WAS IN A CASH BOX ARTICLE, AND JOHN JOKES AT SCHOOL WHEN HE WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD. AFTER EXPRESSING THEIR ADMIRATION FOR MOTOWN ARTISTS, THE GROUP THANKS THEIR FANS AND ED SULLIVAN AND SAYS THE GROUP WILL PROBABLY RETURN TO THE U.S. IN SEPTEMBER.

CONDITION: VG / VG++ (VG+)

THIS CONTEST HAD TWO WINNERS WHO WENT ALONG ON THE TRIP WITH CLAY (HE LEFT HIS POSITION AT CKLW IN JUNE OF 1964 AND WAS NOT PRESENT FOR THEIR DETROIT CONCERT).

THE AMERICAN TOUR WITH ED RUDY
NEWS DOC NO. 2

RADIO PULSE BEAT NEWS
RELEASED: 6/9/64

(ACTUAL IMAGES)

ED RUDY WAS A VETERAN NEWSMAN WITH RADIO, TV AND NEWSPAPER EXPERIENCE, WHO IN 1964, THROUGH HIS INS RADIO NEWS SERVICE, PROVIDED AUDIO INTERVIEWS TO RADIO PULSEBEAT NEWS FOR DISTRIBUTION TO RADIO STATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. AFTER RECEIVING INQUIRIES ON THE BEATLES, INS SENT A RADIO BILLBOARD TO STATIONS TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF INTEREST. WHEN 440 STATIONS INDICATED THEY WANTED TO BUY AUDIO OF THE BEATLES, ED RUDY INTERVIEWED THE GROUP DURING THEIR FIRST U.S. VISIT. HE WAS THE ONLY AMERICAN REPORTER PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE TOUR.

THIS IS THE FIRST (OF THREE) BEATLE DOCUMENTARY RECORDS THAT ED RUDY COMPILED. THE RECORD WAS INTENDED ONLY FOR RADIO PROGRAMMING, YET DUE TO BEATLE FANS EXPRESSING INTEREST IN THE ALBUM, RUDY EVENTUALLY PRESSED ADDITIONAL COPIES WHICH WERE THEN SOLD IN STORES (LIST PRICE $3.98) AND BY MAIL ($2.98). TO ENHANCE THE PACKAGE, SOME OF THE ALBUM'S INITIAL ISSUES CAME WITH A CUSTOM UN-PRICED COPY OF TEEN TALK MAGAZINE, FEATURING TEXT ON THE FIRST U.S. VISIT AND PHOTOS BY DEZO HOFFMANN.

NOT ALL COPIES OF THIS LP WERE SOLD WITH THE BONUS BEATLES MAGAZINE… THIS ONE HAS THE ORIGINAL UN-PRICED COMPLIMENTARY COPY IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.

ALSO FOUND IN THIS PACKAGE ARE THE TWO ORIGINAL INSERT CARDS, ONE OF WHICH WAS ONCE STAPLED TO BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE MAGAZINE'S BACK COVER.

A TREMENDOUS PACKAGE INCLUDING A MINT, UNPLAYED, LIKE NEW RECORD.

CONDITION: NM / M (UNPLAYED)
ITEM#: PR717
