DESCRIPTION
(ACTUAL IMAGES)

THE ORIGINAL COVER TO "YESTERDAY AND TODAY" CAUSED QUITE A STIR WHEN IT MADE ITS LIMITED APPEARANCE IN JUNE 1966. IT MARKED THE FIRST TIME THAT THE BEATLES JUDGMENT WAS SEVERELY AND UNIVERSALLY CRITICIZED. THE CONTROVERSIAL COVER DEPICTED THE BEATLES IN WHITE BUTCHER SMOCKS SURROUNDED BY SLABS OF MEAT AND DECAPITATED BABY DOLLS.

CAPITOL RECORDS PROCEEDED WITH THE PRESSING, PACKAGING AND SHIPPING OF 750,000 COPIES TO ITS DISTRIBUTORS. THE RESPONSE WAS IMMEDIATE AND UNIFORMLY NEGATIVE, AND FORCED CAPITOL'S PRESIDENT ALAN LIVINGSTON, TO PULL THE PLUG ON THE BUTCHER. A MASSIVE RECALL WAS QUICKLY FORMULATED AND SET INTO MOTION SO THAT ALL COPIES OF THE ALBUM WERE TO BE RETURNED AND A REPLACEMENT FRONT SLICK WAS TO BE PASTED OVER THE "OFFENSIVE" BUTCHER COVER (HENCE THE 'SECOND STATE''  BUTCHER WAS BORN) , ALTHOUGH THOUSANDS OF THE BUTCHER COVERS WERE ALREADY DESTROYED BY CAPITOL'S JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS PLANT.

ONCE THE RECALL DECISION WAS MADE, CAPITOL BEGAN PREPARING THE REPLACEMENT COVER FOR THE 750,000 RECORDS THAT HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BUTCHER COVER JACKETS. THE NEW "PASTE OVER" SLICK SHOWED THE BEATLES STANDING AROUND A STEAMER TRUNK (WITH PAUL INSIDE) AND THIS CAME TO BE KNOWN AS THE "TRUNK COVER".

FAB 4 COLLECTIBLES MOST PROUDLY OFFERS THIS MAJESTIC STILL FACTORY SEALED SECOND STATE PASTE-OVER MONAURAL BUTCHER COVER. THE REPLACEMENT "TRUNK COVER" SLICK IS SO CLEAR AND APPLIED SO CLEANLY, ONE CAN PLAINLY SEE RINGO'S HEAD, AND DOWN TO THE "V" IMPRESSION OF HIS BLACK SWEATER ON THE ORIGINAL FIRST STATE "BUTCHER" COVER SLICK BENEATH THE PASTE OVER SLICK. THIS COVER REMAINS STILL SEALED AND AS RELEASED WHEN IT WAS SHIPPED OUT FROM CAPITOL'S SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA FACTORY FOLLOWING THE RECALL PROJECT AND "PASTE-OVER" PROCESS. A FACTORY INDUCED SMALL WRINKLE ON THE PASTED TRUNK COVER IS EVIDENT, YET DOES NOT DETRACT FROM THE OVERALL BEAUTY. THIS COVER IS A STELLAR SNOW "WHITE" AND THE GRAPHICS ARE PHENOMENAL.

THIS IS A SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA PRESSING, AS DICTATED BY THE FACTORY NUMBER "3" DESIGNATION ON THE BACK COVER IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER. THE COVER HAS AN EXTREMELY TIGHT SEAL CORNER TO CORNER. THE CORRECT PERIOD CAPITOL RECORDS "1966 ORANGE" INNER DUST ADVERTISEMENT SLEEVE IS VERY CLEARLY VISIBLE THROUGH MOUTH OPENING. THERE ARE 4 FACTORY SHRINK "BREATH HOLES" EVIDENT, ONE ON THE FRONT AND THREE ON THE BACK.. THE ORIGINAL 1¾" ROUND WHITE STORE PRICE STICKER REMAINS ADHERED ONTO THE FRONT SHRINK TO THE LEFT OF JOHN'S IMAGE THAT STATES IN DARK BLUE PRINT "SPECIAL DISCOUNT PRICE $2.88".

THE SPINE AND PRINT ARE PERFECTLY SQUARE AND LEGIBLE THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH OF THE COVER. TRULY MAGNIFICENT FROM CORNER TO CORNER WITH BEAUTIFUL SHARP CORNERS,  NO RINGWEAR, THIS GEM OF A STILL FACTORY SEALED EXAMPLE OF A MONAURAL SECOND STATE (PASTE OVER) BUTCHER COVER, IS OUR ONLY THIRD SEALED EXAMPLE OF A MONO SECOND STATE BUTCHER IN TWENTY YEARS.

THE SEALED BUTCHER COVER IS ACCOMPANIED BY A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM THOMAS VANGHELE, PROPRIETOR OF FAB 4 COLLECTIBLES.

ALSO INCLUDED ARE TWO PHOTO COPIES OF ORIGINAL CAPITOL RECORDS DOCUMENTS CONCERNING THE BUTCHER CONTROVERSY. ONE IS A LETTER FROM RON TEPPER (CAPITOL'S PRESS AND INFORMATION SERVICES MANAGER) THAT WAS DISTRIBUTED TO RECORD REVIEWERS. THE SECOND IS A CAPITOL INTER-OFFICE MEMO FROM JOE SOBECK (CAPITOL'S BOSTON DISTRIBUTION MANAGER) DESCRIBING IN DETAIL THE PROCESS OF THE DESTRUCTION AND DUMPING OF THE ORIGINAL FIRST STATE BUTCHER COVERS. THE THIRD PHOTO COPY IS A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE'S JUNE 25, 1966 EDITION. THE ARTICLE REPORTS THE BUTCHER COVER RECALL, WITH THE HEADLINE "BEATLES MAKE $250,000 GOOF".
