"WE CAN WORK IT OUT" B/W "DAY TRIPPER" |
||
DESCRIPTION (ACTUAL IMAGES) THE BEATLES SINGLE FOR THE 1965 HOLIDAY SEASON WAS RECORDED DURING THE "RUBBER SOUL" SESSIONS AND PAIRED 'WE CAN WORK IT OUT" WITH "DAY TRIPPER". WHEN EMI ANNOUNCED IN MID-NOVEMBER THAT 'WE CAN WORK IT OUT" WOULD BE THE A-SIDE, JOHN INSISTED THAT "DAY TRIPPER" BE PLUGGED AS THE TOP SIDE. GEORGE MARTIN TOLD 'NME' MAGAZINE IN ITS NOVEMBER 19 ISSUE THAT "AFTER WE GAVE BOTH SIDES TO EMI THE BOYS DECIDED THEY PREFERRED "DAY TRIPPER", BUT BOTH SIDES ARE EXTREMELY GOOD AND WORTH A LOT OF PLAYS. AS FAR AS EMI'S OFFICIAL POLICY IS CONCERNED, THERE IS NO A-SIDE - BOTH WILL BE PROMOTED EQUALLY ON THE COMPANY'S RADIO LUXEMBOURG PROGRAMS, FOR EXAMPLE." AT THE TIME THE DISC WAS RELEASED ON PARLOPHONE R 5389 ON DECEMBER 3, 1965, THIS DOUBLE A-SIDE CAMPAIGN WAS UNIQUE TO THE BRITISH MARKET (EMI HAD PREVIOUSLY PLANNED ON MARKETING "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" B/W "THINGS WE SAID TODAY" AS A DOUBLE A-SIDED SINGLE, BUT CHANGED ITS MIND SHORTLY BEFORE THE DISC'S RELEASE). THE NOVEMBER 20 DISC WEEKLY REPORTED THAT THE BEATLES WERE EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW SINGLE, CONSIDERING IT THEIR BEST EVER. GEORGE WAS QUOTED AS SAYING "WE'RE ALL MADE UP ABOUT IT." AS FOR WHICH SONG WAS THE BEST, HARRISON SAID, 'AFTER A LOT OF TALK, WE DECIDED "DAY TRIPPER" IS REALLY THE TOP TRACK. THIS IS WHAT WE WANTED ALL ALONG." THE SINGLE MADE ITS DEBUT IN THE DECEMBER 9 RECORD RETAILER AS "DAY TRIPPER" / "WE CAN WORK IT OUT" AT NUMBER TWO. THE FOLLOWING WEEK IT MOVED UP TO NUMBER ONE, WHERE IT REMAINED FOR FIVE WEEKS. THE BEATLES DISC CHARTED FOR 12 WEEKS, INCLUDING NINE IN THE TOP TEN. FAB 4 COLLECTIBLES PROUDLY OFFERS THE ULTRA-RARE PARLOPHONE DEMONSTRATION RECORD OF "WE CAN WORK IT OUT" B/W "DAY TRIPPER". THE WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL DISC ISSUED AS A DOUBLE A-SIDED SINGLE, HAS THE LARGE OVERSIZED RED "A" ON BOTH SIDES - THE ONE AND ONLY DOUBLE A-SIDED DEMONSTRATION RECORD IN THE BEATLES PARLOPHONE CATALOG. THE LABELS ALSO HAVE THE DISC'S RELEASE DATE "3.12.65" PRINTED DIRECTLY BELOW THE CENTER SPINDLE HOLE. THE CONDITION OF THE VINYL ON THIS ULTRA-RARITY IS A BRILLIANT NEAR MINT, WITH CLEAN, GLOSSY AND UNWORN PLAYING SURFACES BEARING NO NOTICEABLE MARKS IN STRONG DAYLIGHT, JUST A FEW HARMLESS WHISPY PAPER TYPE HAIRLINES BENEATH HALOGEN LIGHT. THE LABELS ARE EQUALLY BEAUTIFUL, BOTH ARE BRIGHT AND INTACT WITH NO WRITING, STICKERS OR TEARS. JUST A FEW SMALL AGE-SPOTS ARE VISIBLE ON THE "DAY TRIPPER" LABEL ONLY. THE AUDIO OF THIS RECORD IS EXCELLENT WITH BOTH TRACKS PLAYING CLEARLY WITHOUT ANY GROOVE OR PLAYWEAR. THERE ARE NO SKIPS, REPEATS, CLICKS OR OTHER SUCH FAULTS. ASIDE FROM A LITTLE VINYL BACKGROUND ON THE RUN-INS AND GUITAR BREAKS IN "DAY TRIPPER", THERE IS VERY LITTLE TO FAULT ON THIS OUTSTANDING AND RARE DISC. THE RUN-OUT MATRIX NUMBERS ARE: "7XCE 18341-4" AND "7XCE 18342-1". THE
STAMPER CODES ARE: "1" / "A" AND "3" / "RL".
