JOLLY WHAT!
THE BEATLES &
FRANK IFIELD ON STAGE
VEE-JAY VJS 1085, STEREO
RELEASED: 2/10/64(ACTUAL IMAGES)
VEE-JAY STEREO PRESSINGS ARE MUCH RARER THAN THE MONO,
AND THIS COVER IS NEAR MINT. IT IS UNDOUBTEDLY NOT ONLY THE VERY BEST
EXAMPLE WE HAVE EVER ACQUIRED FOR THIS TITLE, WHICH IS NOTORIOUS
FOR WEAR, BUT THE BEST WE HAVE EVER SEEN. THERE IS NO
RINGWEAR AT ALL ON THIS BEAUTY, AND THE COLORS AND GRAPHICS ARE
BOLD AND DEEP. THE EXTENT OF WEAR IS THE TYPICAL, SLIGHT WEAR OF THE
TIPS ON THE UPPER AND LOWER LEFT CORNERS ONLY, AND SOME VERY MINIMAL
SHELF WEAR ALONG SOME OF THE BOTTOM SEAM.
THE WHITENESS OF THE BACK COVER REMAINS WITH A CLEAN
BRIGHT TONE WITH NO DIRT OR RINGWEAR EVIDENT. NO YELLOWING.
THE SPINE IS ROCK SOLID AND THE PRINT IS THERE, VERIFYING IT AS AUTHENTIC.
THE ACCOMPANYING STEREO RECORD IS A GORGEOUS NEAR MINT
EXAMPLE WITH THE LABEL VARIATION FEATURING THE COLORBAND AND OVAL LOGO.
IT HAS LEFT JUSTIFIED ARTIST-ONLY CREDITS, THE ALBUM NUMBER VJLPS 1085
AND "STEREO" AT THE 3 O'CLOCK POSITION. THE TRAIL-OFF MARKINGS ON
BOTH SIDES CONTAIN THE MACHINE STAMPED "MR" IN A CIRCLE AND AUDIO
MATRIX LOGOS, WHICH INDICATE THAT THE DISC WAS PRESSED BY MONARCH RECORDS.
(VJ1085.SR1, SPIZER).
IN ADDITION, THE ORIGINAL VEE-JAY
"AD BACK" INNER SLEEVE IS ALSO THERE IN THIS SET.

VEE-JAY VJ 1085, MONO

THE COVER IS A VERY TERRIFIC AND SOLID VG+++,
WITH THE ONLY WEAR EVIDENT IS SLIGHT AND LIGHT EDGE WEAR AT THE BOTTOM.

THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY RINGWEAR ON THE GLOSSY,
DARK PURPLE BACKGROUND FRONT COVER, AND THE
BACK COVER IS FREE OF DIRT OR RINGWEAR AND RETAINS A NICE TONE THROUGHOUT. THE
COVER DOES HAVE THE SPINE PRINT VERIFYING IT AS AUTHENTIC.
ACCOMPANIED BY A LOVELY NEAR MINT MINUS RECORD WITH AN
UNDOCUMENTED LABEL VARIATION FOR THIS TITLE.
IT IS A COLORBAND & BRACKETS LABEL RECORD, PRESSED BY MONARCH RECORDS.

"PORTRAIT" COVER
VEE-JAY VJ 1085, MONO
RELEASED: 9/18/64THE RAREST OF THE VEE-JAY BEATLES ALBUMS IS THE SECOND
AND "VERY LIMITED" PRESSING OF
"THE BEATLES & FRANK IFIELD ON STAGE".
BECAUSE OF POOR SALES ON THE ORIGINAL RELEASE "JOLLY WHAT!", THE SOLUTION WAS
TO REPACKAGE THE ALBUM IN SUCH A WAY AS TO FOCUS ON THE ALBUM'S STRENGTHS AND
DOWNPLAY ITS WEAKNESSES. THE REISSUE COVER FEATURES THE STRIKING PORTRAIT OF THE
BEATLES PREVIOUSLY USED ON VEE-JAY'S SUBSIDIARY TOLLIE LABEL, THE "LOVE ME DO" PICTURE SLEEVE.
THIS MONAURAL "PORTRAIT" COVER GRADES AN EXCELLENT NEAR MINT MINUS, BORDERING
SLIGHTLY ON A SUPERB VG+++, AND IS
ACCOMPANIED BY THE ORIGINAL "THE BEATLES AND FRANK IFIELD ON STAGE" MONO RECORD.
THIS LABEL VARIATION HAS THE COLORBAND AND BRACKETS LOGO. THE ORIGINAL
VEE-JAY "AD BACK" INNER SLEEVE IS ALSO INCLUDED.

GATEFOLD COVERWITH RARE 'CONCERT BANNER' STICKER ADHERED TO THE
BOTTOM OF FRONT COVER.
(ACTUAL IMAGES)
THIS VEE-JAY ALBUM IS A FANCY RE-PACKAGING OF THE SECOND VERSION OF "INTRODUCING
THE BEATLES", AND AS EXPECTED WITH ALL VEE-JAY RECORDS, A STEREO PRESSING OF
THIS LP IN THIS CONDITION IS A GREAT FIND. THE SCARCITY OF THE STEREO VERSION OF
THIS RECORD IS NOT SURPRISING CONSIDERING THAT LESS THAN 2% OF THE ALBUMS SOLD
(7,375) WERE STEREO. THE COVER OFFERED HERE IS THE FIRST
VARIATION STANDARD STEREO COVER ISSUED FOR
THIS RELEASE, WITH THE WORD "STEREO" IN BLUEPRINT AT THE TOP OF THE COVER.
AN ADDED BONUS ON THIS EXAMPLE, ONE OF THE VARIOUS RARE 'CONCERT BANNER'
STICKERS IS ADHERED TO THE BOTTOM OF FRONT COVER. THESE "BANNER" ALBUMS WERE
SOLD EXCLUSIVELY AT RECORD STORES LOCATED IN THE CONCERT VENUE CITIES. THIS
EXAMPLE IS FROM THE GROUP'S SEPTEMBER 2, 1964 APPEARANCE AT THE "CONVENTION
HALL" IN PHILADELPHIA, PA. THE ACCOMPANYING "INTRODUCING THE
BEATLES" STEREO RECORD IS THE COLORBAND AND BRACKETS VARIATION WITH
"STEREO" PRINT AT THE 12 O'CLOCK POSITION ON THE LABELS

GATEFOLD COVERWITH ULTRA-RARE RED RECTANGULAR STICKER CONTAINING
THE WORD "STEREO" IN BLACK.
(ACTUAL IMAGES)
THE COVER OFFERED HERE IS NOT THE STANDARD STEREO
COVER ISSUED WITH THIS RELEASE
(WITH THE WORD "STEREO" IN BLUE AT THE TOP OF THE COVER).
AS WAS THE CASE WITH THE INTRODUCING THE BEATLES LP,
VEE-JAY HAD THE FACTORIES IMPROVISE STEREO COVERS WHEN
ONLY MONO COVERS WERE AVAILABLE.
THIS IS THE ULTRA-RARE VERSION,
WHICH IS THE MONO COVER MODIFIED WITH A
RED RECTANGULAR STICKER (VJ1092.SC3, SPIZER)
CONTAINING THE WORD "STEREO" IN BLACK.
THE STICKER IS SIMPLY PERFECT, AND GRADED MINT MINUS.
THESE STEREO STICKER VERSIONS ARE MUCH RARER
THAN THE NORMAL STEREO COVER (SPIZER, PAGE 161, VJ BOOK).
THE JACKET HAS A GATEFOLD COVER WHOSE FLAP IS
TWO-THIRDS OF THE FULL JACKET'S SIZE. THIS EXAMPLE IS SIMPLY STUPENDOUS,
FOR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE GATEFOLD, IT REMAINS VERY STIFF,
MEANING THAT OPENING IT HAS BEEN MINIMAL OVER THE YEARS.
THE GATEFOLD IS FLAWLESS. NO WEAR, NO SPLITS.
THE BACK COVER LEAVES NO DOUBT THAT VEE-JAY WAS MARKETING THIS RECORD
FOR YOUNG GIRLS. BELOW RINGO'S COLOR-TINTED PICTURE IS THE PHRASE
"RINGO LOVES" AND A BLUE DASH-BORDERED HEART CONTAINING THE PHRASE
"PICTURE HERE". SIMILAR PICTURES, LANGUAGE AND HEARTS APPEAR FOR THE OTHER BEATLES.
THE CONDITION OF THIS SET IS JUST MARVELOUS IN EVERY FACTOR !
THE COVER IS A FANTASTIC NEAR MINT MINUS WITH JUST SOME MINOR HANDLING WEAR POINTS.
TO FIND THIS FRAGILE FRONT GATEFOLD COVER IN THIS CONDITION
IS QUITE A FIND FOR A COLLECTOR - ESPECIALLY THE STEREO VERSION !!!
THE SPINE, WHICH IS USUALLY FOUND IN DISASTROUS FLAKY CONDITION,
IS SOLID AS A ROCK.
THE ACCOMPANYING STEREO RECORD IS IN STRONG
VG++ RESPECTABLE CONDITION, AND IS THE COLORBAND AND BRACKETS

GATEFOLD COVERACCOMPANIED BY RARER 45 SIZE LABEL VARIATION
(ACTUAL IMAGES) THIS VEE-JAY ALBUM IS A FANCY RE-PACKAGING OF THE SECOND VERSION OF
"INTRODUCING
THE BEATLES", AND This Mono pressing is
TRULY A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE. The Cover,
which is always so notorious for wear and tear, REMAINS dark, bold WITH VIBRANT colors. There are
SOME very minor and minimal wear
points, WHICH DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE OVERALL APPEARANCE. THERE ARE TWO TINY
IMPERCEPTIBLE STAPLE HOLES WHERE A PRICE TAG WAS ONCE AFFIXED TO THE UPPER LEFT
CORNER OF THE FRONT THAT RUNS THROUGH TO THE BACK COVER. THE BACK COVER
IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, NO RINGWEAR. THE SPINE IS SOLID, SQUARE AND LEGIBLE,
WITH MINIMAL WEAR TO THE EDGES. The INSIDE gatefold is STUNNING. No wear, no
splits, AND All areas are clean and white. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE GATEFOLD,
IT HAS A STIFF "LIKE NEW" FEEL SIGNIFYING THAT THE GATEFOLD HAS NOT BEEN OPEN
TOO OFTEN.. VEE-JAY'S HABIT OF USING WHATEVER LABEL BACKDROPS WERE
AVAILABLE LED TO A STRANGE VARIATION OF THIS RECORD.
SOME RECORDS WERE PRESSED WITH 45-SIZE LABELS - WHICH HAVE
CENTERED SONG TITLES AND CREDITS, INCLUDING THE
"COFFIN-KING" TYPO (SHOULD READ "GOFFIN-KING"), WITH
"MICROGROOVE" AND "LONGPLAYING". HOWEVER, IT IS PRINTED ON A
BLACK LABEL WITH AN OUTER RIM COLORBAND FEATURING A SMALL

GATEFOLD COVER(ACTUAL IMAGES)
THIS VEE-JAY ALBUM IS A FANCY RE-PACKAGING OF THE SECOND VERSION OF "INTRODUCING
THE BEATLES", AND This Mono pressing is
simply the very best example we have ever acquired of this release. The Cover,
which is always so notorious for wear and tear, is absolutely beautiful with
dark, bold, bright colors. There are just two very minor and minimal wear
points. One is on the bottom left corner, and an ½" along
the bottom seam. No splits anywhere on this Cover. Simply great. THE BACK COVER
IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, NO RINGWEAR.
The gatefold is gorgeous. No wear, no
splits. Only areas of minor and light age "toning" is evident on The two-thirds
side of the gatefold only - on the upper right area and the lower left near the
bottom edge. All other areas are clean and white.
The accompanying Mono record is in
glistening Mint Minus condition, simply stunning indeed, and truly appears to
have been played once and then stored. It features the all black Label
(without the outer rim Colorband) with silver print and "VJ" in large block
letters with "VEE-JAY RECORDS" printed below. This particular variation has the
word "SIDE" in upper case and the thin microprint song titles. The Side 1
trail-off area, has the hand etched job number ∆6307, the hand etched matrix
number 63-3402 and the Monarch Records logo Is scratched over, indicating a
stamper previously used by Monarch. The Side 2 trail-off has the hand etched
matrix number 63-3403 (VJ1062(2).MR4A, Spizer).
